Musings Darkroom

Where analogue photography lives, inside a legacy of creativity

ABOUT ROSETTA ARTS

The Rosetta Arts stands as a creative landmark in East London. Founded in 1993 by Yvonne Humble, a visionary educator and RCA graduate, the organisation began in a single classroom at Rosetta Primary School with a radical belief: art should be accessible to everyone, not just the privileged few.

What started as a small, experimental art programme grew into something far greater. Yvonne's approach was innovative and personal, encouraging students to develop their own creative journeys over three years, nurturing talent, entrepreneurial skills, and artistic confidence.

Today, Rosetta Arts is based at the Gainsborough Learning Centre in West Ham and has become a leading community visual arts centre, equipped with a pottery studio, printmaking and painting rooms, a gallery, a photography studio, and at its heart, a cherished darkroom.

As an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, Rosetta Arts continues its mission to provide transformative arts experiences for underrepresented communities in Newham and across East London.

And now, Musings Darkroom proudly continues that legacy.

ABOUT MUSINGS DARKROOM

Nestled within the Rosetta Arts Building, Musings Darkroom is a dedicated black-and-white analogue photography space, created for photographers of all levels, from curious beginners to seasoned film enthusiasts.

We believe in the timeless magic of the darkroom: the quiet focus, the scent of chemicals, the anticipation as an image slowly appears in the developer tray. It's a craft that demands patience, care, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected, and we're here to make that experience accessible to everyone.

Our Approach

We're not just a space, we're a community. At Musings Darkroom, we believe in accessibility. We keep our rates affordable so that analogue photography remains open to all. More Than Just a Darkroom

At Musings Darkroom, we want to be more than just a place to print. We envision a space for conversation, for debate, and for genuine connection. A place where ideas are exchanged, friendships are formed, and the love for analogue photography brings people together.

That's why we're planning regular events, from informal meetups and portfolio reviews to artist talks and communal printing sessions. We want to create opportunities for our members to gather, share their work, discuss their processes, and inspire one another.

Because photography is not just about the images we make, but about the community we build around them.

Our Connection to Rosetta Arts

Musings Darkroom is part of the Rosetta Arts family, a living continuation of Yvonne Humble's vision. We share the same walls that once welcomed a young Alexander McQueen, who studied at Rosetta Arts and went on to become one of the most influential fashion designers of all time.

Every print made in our darkroom carries forward that spirit of creative ambition, nurturing talent, and making art accessible to everyone.

Whether you're new to film photography or a seasoned printer looking for a space to work, we'd love to welcome you.
